Franchising has been a popular way to expand and increase store count in the restaurant industry since the 1950s, and is still a favourite strategy for growing domestically and internationally. Most of the largest chains have recently embarked on re-franchising processes, turning company-operated stores into franchised ones as part of their ‘turnaround’ strategies. In this report we look at the universe of franchising globally – what the drivers are, where the opportunities lie, and where we go from here.
